HRC-Z recognises excellence in Civic Education at Kabulonga Boys Awards Ceremony

On 10th October 2025, the Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC-Z) joined pupils, teachers, and parents at Kabulonga Secondary School for Boys in Lusaka to celebrate academic excellence, discipline, and innovation during the school’s annual Awards Ceremony.

The event, brought together education stakeholders, corporate sponsors, and government representatives in honour of outstanding learners who excelled in various academic and extracurricular fields.

HRC-Z participated both as a sponsor and exhibitor, awarding prizes to the highest-performing pupils in Civic Education from Grades 10, 11, and 12. The Commission’s participation aimed to promote civic awareness, human rights education and responsible citizenship among learners.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Guest of Honour, Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati, MP, whose speech was delivered on his behalf by Acting Director for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Mwenya Mulenga, commended the school for its continued record of producing exemplary leaders.

“Coming back to this school, which has produced leaders in many fields of our nation, is both humbling and inspiring. This institution is a beacon of discipline, academic excellence, and character formation,” said Hon. Mutati.

Hon. Mutati said the event was a celebration of “academic success, discipline, leadership, creativity and innovation,” adding that the awardees’ achievements demonstrated the power of resilience and focus among young learners.

He emphasized the need for Zambia to nurture a generation of digitally literate and technologically skilled youth to drive national development.

“It is for this reason that Government is investing in ICT infrastructure, digital skills training, and science and technology programmes in schools as evidenced by the ongoing countrywide internet connection of all secondary schools, including Kabulonga Secondary School for Boys,” he said.

“To the pupils excelling in Computer Science and Technology, you are not only representing your school but carrying the hope of Zambia’s digital transformation. Continue to dream, innovate, and position yourselves as leaders of the fourth industrial revolution,” he added.

The Minister also paid tribute to teachers and parents, describing them as the “unsung heroes” behind the success of every learner.

“Without your sacrifice, dedication and mentorship, this ceremony would not have been possible. To parents and guardians, thank you for standing by your children and encouraging them to pursue education with seriousness. Your role is irreplaceable,” he said.

In his message to the learners, Hon. Mutati encouraged them to value education, discipline, and technology as the keys to a successful future.

“Education is the passport to the future; discipline is the compass that will guide you through life, and technology is the tool that will open opportunities beyond borders. Aim high, work hard and know that your nation is counting on you to build a smart, innovative and prosperous Zambia,” said the Minister.

Other sponsors of the event included SPJ, Seba Foods, The Bed Shop and the Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ).
