The Human Rights Commission Participates in a Sensitisation on Children’s Rights and Parental Responsibility in Nseluka

The Human Rights Commission Zambia (HRC-Z), through its Northern Province Office, joined other stakeholders in a sensitisation programme on children’s rights and parental responsibility held at Nseluka Primary and Secondary School in Nseluka Town, Mungwi District of Northern province on 17th October 2025.

The event was organised in collaboration with the Gender Division, the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA), the Ministry of Education, the Zambia Police Service, and the local NGO Bakashana & Balumendo Basambilile. The sensitisation aimed to raise awareness among pupils, parents, and community members on the importance of child protection, education, and responsible parenting.

During the engagement, the Commission expressed concern over the increasing cases of teenage suicides linked to early pregnancies and defilement. Parents, guardians, and community leaders were urged to remain vigilant, take active roles in the upbringing of children, and provide consistent guidance and emotional support to prevent such tragedies.

Through interactive discussions and the distribution of human rights education materials, pupils and parents were sensitised on children’s rights, the legal implications of child abuse, and the collective responsibility of families and communities to safeguard children’s well-being.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with both State and Non-State Actors to promote and protect the rights of children and to ensure that every child grows up in a safe, nurturing, and rights-respecting environment.
