HRC-Z Director General Calls for Human Rights-Centred Mining Operations

The Human Rights Commission of Zambia has called on mining companies to ensure human rights and environmental sustainability are central to their operations, emphasising that corporate social responsibility should meaningfully improve the dignity, welfare, and development of host communities rather than being merely about fulfilling compliance requirements.

Speaking during the opening of the Sinazongwe District Alternative Mining Indaba on 3rd June 2026, Director General Ms. Mbololwa Wamunyima said the Commission had continued to monitor developments in mining communities nationwide.

She noted persistent concerns, including environmental degradation, inadequate compensation for displaced families, limited access to clean and safe drinking water, and the disruption of traditional livelihoods.

Ms. Wamunyima stressed that such challenges directly undermine the enjoyment of fundamental human rights.

She said the Indaba, themed “From Coal to Community Development: Balancing Sustainability and Mining in Sinazongwe,” was both timely and important as it provided a platform for dialogue, accountability, and meaningful participation.

“The Indaba brings together communities, government institutions, mining companies, civil society organisations and cooperating partners to collectively explore how mining can drive sustainable and inclusive development while upholding human rights and environmental standards,” she said.

Ms. Wamunyima urged stakeholders to use the Indaba to strengthen collaboration and identify practical solutions that ensure mining contributes to sustainable community development and the protection of human rights.

Later, Ms. Wamunyima toured Maamba Energy Limited, where Chief Executive Officer Lt. Col. Cyrus Minwalla (Rtd.) provided an overview of the company’s operations before leading the delegation on a tour of the mining site.

The HRC-Z Director General commended the company for its commitment towards upholding human rights standards in its operations and urged it to continue adhering to business and human rights principles.

The Sinazongwe Alternative Mining Indaba, a platform for dialogue, advocacy, and collaboration, is being held from the 3rd of June 2026 to the 4th of June 2026.
