HRC-Z Commemorates 40 years of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights

The Human Rights Commission – Zambia (HRC-Z) joins the African continent in commemorating African Human Rights Day on 21 October 2026, marking 40 years since the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights entered into force on 21 October 1986.

The African Charter is a regional human rights treaty that sets out fundamental rights and freedoms, including the rights to life, equality, dignity, education, health and freedom of expression. It also recognises the rights of peoples, including the right to development, and outlines the duties of individuals towards others and their communities.

The commemoration provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the Charter in guiding efforts to promote and protect human rights across Africa.

This year’s commemoration is held under the theme “Adoption and Implementation of the African Charter: A Journey Towards the Africa We Want.”

In Zambia, the Human Rights Commission continues to fulfil its constitutional mandate to promote and protect human rights.

As the continent marks this milestone, HRC-Z calls on public institutions, civil society and members of the public to uphold the principles of the African Charter and contribute to a society founded on equality, justice and respect for human dignity.
