HRC-Z Reaffirms Its Commitment to the Right to Education and Access to Water at Katongo Combined School

Access to safe water and sanitation is essential to learners’ health and dignity and supports their right to education.

The Human Rights Commission – Zambia (HRC-Z) reaffirms its commitment to promoting and protecting fundamental human rights, including the right to education and access to safe water, following reports that Katongo Combined School in Mongu District, Western Province, had closed due to a water shortage.

Through its Mongu Provincial Office, HRC-Z visited the school on 13 October 2026 to establish the situation on the ground.

During the visit, HRC-Z also found Mongu District Commissioner Mr Morgan Akabeswa at the school, assessing the status of the water supply. The school management was equally engaged in ensuring that learning continued.

The Commission found the school open, with learners attending classes and water available. The school’s water pump had been damaged by lightning during heavy rains on 8 October 2026 and was replaced on 12 October 2026, restoring the water supply.

The Commission encourages the public to seek verified information from relevant authorities before sharing reports that may cause unnecessary alarm. Responsible communication helps build public confidence and ensures that genuine concerns receive the attention they deserve.
