HRC-Z Hosts ICGLR Delegation for Pre-Electoral Assessment

The Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC-Z) on Friday, 29th May 2026, hosted a delegation from the Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre for Democracy and Good Governance (LMRC), a specialised think tank and autonomous technical organ of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), as part of a pre-electoral assessment mission ahead of the August 2026 General Election.

The assessment forms part of a nationwide exercise being undertaken by LMRC to evaluate Zambia’s electoral preparedness and the broader electoral environment as the country is one of the founders of the 12-member ICGLR.

HRC-Z Director General, Ms. Mbololwa Wamunyima, received the delegation and reviewed the country’s state of electoral readiness, with particular focus on the promotion and protection of human rights before, during and after the elections.

The meeting also examined existing human rights monitoring mechanisms, identified potential electoral-related risks, and explored measures aimed at fostering a peaceful, inclusive and credible electoral process.

The national assessment, which commenced in April and is expected to conclude in September 2026, underscores Zambia’s commitment to the principles of democracy, peace and good governance enshrined in the Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region, the founding instrument of the ICGLR.
