The Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC-Z) has concluded a two-week intensive training workshop aimed at strengthening the capacity of its staff to effectively monitor and investigate child rights violations or abuse, and ensure appropriate redress for victims in line with the Zambian Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022.
The training, which took place from 6th to 17th October 2025 at The Wish Executive Lodge in Kafue District, was facilitated by the Child Justice Forum with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It brought together 70 HRC-Z staff members drawn from all ten provinces of Zambia.
During the workshop, participants were equipped with comprehensive knowledge of the Children’s Code Act, as well as child safeguarding principles and procedures.
The sessions focused on strengthening the capacity of officers to effectively monitor, document, and report on the implementation of the Act and to handle cases of child rights violations or abuse with professionalism and sensitivity.
The training further provided participants with practical skills to promote and protect children’s rights through early detection, investigation, and referral of violations for redress.
Trainers were drawn from the Judiciary, the academia, and the human rights community, offering diverse perspectives and expertise on child protection and access to justice.
This training marks a significant step in enhancing the Commission’s oversight role and execution of its mandate to promote and protect human rights, particularly the rights of children, across the country.
By building the capacity of its staff, the HRC-Z reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that the provisions of the Children’s Code Act are effectively implemented and that every child in Zambia enjoys their rights to safety, dignity, and protection from all forms of abuse.
