HRC lawyers, investigators receive specialised training for the protection of marginalised groups

Lawyers and investigators at the Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC-Z) participated in a two-day training on protection of the rights of vulnerable and marginalised groups held from 18th to 19th June 2026 at Mika Convention Centre in Chongwe District.

HRC-Z Director General, Ms. Mbololwa Wamunyina, said the Commission was entrusted with the responsibility of investigating human rights complaints, which required continuous capacity building of its legal and investigations staff to respond professionally, fairly and sensitively to emerging human rights issues.

She stressed that the protection of human rights for vulnerable and marginalised people demands that the institution should be knowledgeable, responsive, and committed to serving every person with dignity and respect.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Acting Resident Representative Mr. Greg Saili commended HRC-Z’s dedication to the protection of the rights of vulnerable and marginalised groups and promotion of their right to access justice.

Mr. Saili who is also Head for Governance and Health reaffirmed the UNDP’s continued support to the Commission through a range of programmes, including election monitoring, business and human rights promotion, and strengthening of its human rights protection mandate.

Mr. Saili acknowledged Zambia’s commitment to actualising the human rights enshrined in regional and international treaties that the country is party to, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals anchored on the global commitment to “Leave No One Behind.”

He observed that stigma and discrimination continued to limit access to health services and justice by marginalised groups, thereby undermining progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on health, gender equality, peace, justice and strong institutions.

The staff capacity building workshop was organised by the UNDP under the WeBelong Africa Project.
