Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC) has urged student teachers to champion human rights in schools by promoting equality, inclusion and respect for the rights of every learner.
The call was made by HRC Complaints and Investigations Officer, Mr. Davison Miyoba, during a human rights sensitisation programme conducted at Mansa College of Education in Luapula Province on 3rd July 2026, which brought together more than 200 student teachers and over 20 members of academic staff.
Addressing the student teachers, Mr. Miyoba underscored the important role educators play in fostering a culture of human rights within schools.
Mr. Miyoba said that teachers have a unique responsibility to shape the values and attitudes of learners and should serve as role models in promoting respect for human rights both inside and outside the classroom.
He urged the participants to embrace a human rights-based approach to education by creating safe, inclusive and non-discriminatory learning environments that uphold the dignity, equality and best interests of every child.
In a separate session with members of academic staff, the Commission highlighted the importance of integrating human rights principles into teaching and learning institutions of higher education to strengthen a culture of respect for human rights.
Speaking on behalf of the College, Acting Principal Ms. Beatrice Chama commended HRC for the informative programme and encouraged continued collaboration through regular sensitisation initiatives to enhance human rights awareness among both students and members of academic staff.
HRC remains committed to promoting a culture of respect for human rights through public education and awareness programmes aimed at empowering citizens with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities.
