The Human Rights Commission-Zambia (HRC-Z) has engaged 130 student teachers and lecturers at Monze College of Education, emphasising the importance of integrating human rights education into teaching and learning.
The engagement, held on 29 October 2026, focused on the Commission’s mandate, the Zambian Bill of Rights, children’s rights and the effects of corporal punishment.
The student teachers were encouraged to understand and uphold human rights as they prepare for their future role in educating and guiding learners. Particular emphasis was placed on protecting children from corporal punishment and adopting positive approaches to discipline, including guidance and counselling.
The engagement also explored the establishment of a Human Rights Club at the college and the formalisation of continued collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Equipping future teachers with human rights knowledge is part of the Commission’s efforts to promote respect for human rights in classrooms and learning institutions.
