The Human Rights Commission of Zambia (HRC-Z) on Wednesday, 3rd June 2026, conducted a human rights sensitisation session for 300 learners at Chinsali Girls Secondary School in Muchinga Province.
Speaking during the session, HRC-Z Provincial Complaints and Investigations Officer Ms. Nawa Mataa explained to the learners the close relationship between rights and responsibilities.
Ms. Mataa explained that every right comes with a corresponding duty and that respect for both contributes to peaceful, orderly, and productive communities.
The learners were educated on various rights and responsibilities relevant to their daily lives at school, at home, and within their communities, including protection from early marriage, physical abuse, and verbal abuse.
On the right to education, learners were taught that while they have this right, they also have responsibilities to work hard in school, respect school regulations, and safeguard school property.
Additionally, Ms. Mataa encouraged the learners to promptly report incidents of abuse, noting that early reporting enables timely intervention and access to justice for victims.
The Commission further provided information on its mandate and services, including procedures for reporting human rights violations.
The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, which provided a platform for the Commission to clarify and offer guidance on various human rights issues and legal protections available to children.
The engagement, facilitated by the HRC-Z Chinsali Office, forms part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to enhance human rights awareness among young people and empower them with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities.
