As the August 2026 general elections draw near, the Human Rights Commission has stepped up its efforts to protect fundamental rights and freedoms.
The launch of the second phase of the Early Warningand Early Response System on 5th March 2026 provides a platform for the reporting of incidents of political violence and swift response by the Commission and its partners.
To ensure meaningful citizen’s participation in the electoral process, the Commission is also promoting access to information by providing oversight on the implementation of the Access to Information Act No. 24 of 2023, including awareness-raising and capacity building activities or information holders and requesters.
At the same time, the Commission has intensified nationwide stakeholder sensitisation activities to enhance understanding and appreciation of fundamental rights and freedoms related to elections. These activities are targeted at political parties, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and the media in all the provinces.
The Commission also continued engaging law enforcement institutions to enhance compliance with human rights standards. These engagements
are critical to ensuring continued collaboration with key justice sector institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights.
